Applying for Admission

Studying a classical Japanese martial art (Ko-ryu budo) is a fundamentally different activity than most of the martial arts studied in the USA at this time. Not better or worse, but different. Training is in small groups, with students receiving one-on-one instruction from the teacher, physical techniques and the historical framework for why they exist are all explored (Ko-ryu martial art traditions originated while the Samurai still ruled a feudal society in Japan). But this just scratches the surface.

Before you contact us, we ask that you do some homework. Please take the time to read the articles below, the information on this website with the menu above labeled: ‘Jojutsu‘. As well as your own research into Jodo / Jojutsu / Shinto Muso ryu.

We ARE accepting new students in Shinto Muso-ryu Jojutsu  神道夢想流杖

>> Iaido training is full at this time, NOT accepting new Iaido students <<

Set aside some quiet time, get a cup of coffee, and please sit down and read these articles. For someone interested in studying Japanese martial arts these articles are fascinating in their own right.

The ‘FAQ‘ page on this website has information that should be read as well.

As you can see, the Koryu.com is a wealth of information about the classical Japanese Martial arts. Reading time well spent.

Membership and instruction are privileges, not rights. We do not accept people merely because they want to join. We must be convinced that the applicant will produce a net positive value for this Dojo and the Ryu (the school).

Teachers and fellow students invest substantial amounts of time and energy into your initial and ongoing training; it is only worthwhile if you are willing to think long term. Please be aware that the teachers here do this as an avocation, not as a full-time job.  Every individual here is important and contributes to the growth of everyone else around them.

If you have completed the readings listed above, and would like to pursue possible training here, please send an email using the Contact Form found on the menu at the top of this page. We will reply shortly.

Please note the minimum age requirement here is 18.

Lastly, if you are invited to observe training here, do yourself a favor and make a good first impression: be on time, dress in neat but comfortable attire, turn off the cell phone, be curious and have questions.
